Alternative Firing. Raku firing, pit firing, barrel firing and aluminum foil saggar firing are my favorite techniques to do when alternative firing my work. Although I enjoy other alternative firing process and techniques aswell, these are the ones I tend to do the most. Especiallty Raku and Aluminum Foil Saggars. I co-wrote the book Alternative Kilns & Firing Techniques: Raku, Saggar, Pit, Barrel with James C. Watkins that was puhblished in 2006 and we enjoyed being able to share different ways to fast-fire work with a variety of process for a wide range of fired results. I use these techniques for sculptural and vessel work when I’m looking to get the unique surfaces, colors and textures only achievable with these processes. Alternative firing is also just fun to do because you never know exactly what you’ll get and that makes the process exciting every time.
