Stitching, Tooling & Wet Molding: Intro to Basic Leatherworking

  • Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts 556 Parkway Gatlinburg, TN United States (map)

Workshop Overview

In this leathercraft workshop students will learn the foundational skills needed to start exploring the world of leather working.  Basic hand stitching, tooling and wet molding are the three leather working processes that will be introduced. Students will also learn to design patterns and make templates to make you’re their own pieces. Small bags and cases will be the focus of the templates for hand stitching, and tooling and stamping will be learned to emboss and decorate the surface of leather. Tooling is a process used to create custom relief on a leather surface, and wet molding is a process to shape leather into volumetric forms.  The formed leather hardens after drying and can then be used to make a rigid case or bag. This workshop is great for those who have never worked with leather and beginners who want to learn a few new techniques.
